Bogan River at Nyngan, Cobar
Home to rich agricultural heritage, the tongue-in-cheek Big Bogan statue and fascinating colonial history, Nyngan sits on the edge of the tranquil Bogan River (and the 'Great Outback' beyond) and the start of the Barrier Highway, which runs west to Cobar and onto the heritage-listed city of Broken Hill.
The Cobb & Co Heritage Trail runs through Nyngan between Bathurst and Bourke, following the routes the historic stagecoaches took transporting mail and passengers between remote outback towns in the 1800s. Keep an eye out for relics of 19th-century inns, changing stations and homesteads along the way.
Built by a group of retired shearers, the Mid-State Shearing Shed honours the local shearing industry, showcasing shearing memorabilia. Housed in a former railway shed, you’ll find shearing equipment and stalls, bag stencils and murals by local artists.
At the Nyngan Museum, explore the town’s history through a captivating collection of artefacts and displays. Learn about the 1835 journey of explorer Major Thomas Mitchell to reach the Bogan River and the important role railway has played in Nyngan’s history.
North of Nyngan, Macquarie Marshes Nature Reserve is one of the largest inland semi-permanent wetlands in southeast Australia and a major breeding area for waterbirds. Access is restricted, but at certain times National Parks and Wildlife Service runs guided tours.
If you are looking to tick off another one of Australia's quirky 'Big Things', the five-metre-tall Big Bogan stands proud in the centre of town with his mullet, stubbies, Southern Cross tattoo, fishing rod and esky.
Mart’s Café is a great destination for breakfast, coffee and lunch, located close to the Big Bogan statue. For dinner try Gold Medal Chinese Restaurant in the Nyngan Bowling Club or pizza at The Australian Hotel.
For a slice of country luxury, stay at the new Callubri Station, offering unique suites and a private pool on a 140,000-acre working sheep farm 30min from Nyngan.
