Wineries and breweries in The Riverina

The Riverina is the largest wine producing region in NSW and grows more than 60 per cent of the state’s wine grapes. It is divided into three distinct wine regions – Riverina, Gundagai and Tumbarumba – and is home to some of the country’s top wineries, many influenced by its rich Italian heritage.

World-class wineries

In the Riverina wine region, centred around Griffith, you’ll find more than 15 wineries with cellar doors. This is the place to taste the acclaimed botrytis semillon, with over 20 different varieties produced in the region. It was first developed by the De Bortoli family, and their Noble One dessert wine is a local icon.

Other top drops in the Riverina include chardonnay, shiraz and durif, and many of its wineries are still family owned. Visit Calabria Family Wines, Casella Family Brands and Lillypilly Estate.

Gundagai and Tumbarumba are emerging wine regions producing boutique award-winning wines from a number of family-owned vineyards. Leading wineries in these regions include Courabyra Wines and Borambola Wines, which is home to the beautiful 1880s Borambola Homestead.

Breweries in The Riverina

In Wagga Wagga, head straight for the Thirsty Crow Brewery. You can take a tour of the brewery, meet the brewers, sample the latest beers on tap and pick up a six pack to take home with you. Visit in October for Gears and Beers, an annual bike ride and beer festival that also supports local charities.

Borambola Wines in Gundagai also produces beer and cider under its Tuckerbox label. You can taste them both at the cellar door. Just outside of Griffith is the small town of Yenda, home to Yenda Beer. There’s no tasting room, but you will be sure to spot their signature pale ale and crisp lager around town.
