Home to acclaimed vineyards, boutique breweries and award-winning cider houses, Orange enjoys a perfect blend of high altitude, rich volcanic soil and passionate craftsmanship. There are now more than 60 vineyards to visit for distinct cool-climate wines, and you can also meet local brewers to sample world-class products.
Begin your tour by visiting Ferment, a wine centre that showcases a wide range of local vineyards. Learn about the art and science of winemaking from Australia’s first carbon neutral winery, Ross Hill Wines, and stop for a tasting at the beautiful cellar door of Philip Shaw Wines, an Orange wine pioneer.
Heifer Station offers tastings in a 100-year old shearing shed on a gorgeous estate, complete with friendly farm animals. Sit down on the sunny terrace for a tasting at Swinging Bridge or enjoy Alsace-inspired wines at Colmar Estate. On the slopes of Mount Canobolas you’ll find the De Salis vineyard with 180 degree views over the valley below, and you’ll learn about wine-making techniques at the Rowlee Vine to Table Experience.
Cargo Road Wines is one of the oldest vineyards in the region and has a focus on sustainability. Sip a signature zinfandel while enjoying the big view and sunset. At Nashdale Lane Wines, you can taste their award-winning riesling then spend the night in a luxurious glamping tent on the property.
Vineyards can also be found in the villages surrounding Orange. In Millthorpe visit Tamburlaine Organic Wines Cellar Door in the historic Corner Store, and sample a range of organic wines and in a relaxed atmosphere. Millthorpe is also home to Slow Wine Co and Angullong Wines, premium cool-climate wine producers.
A short 10-min drive from Orange, you will find Printhie Wines which has created a unique tasting in The Packing Shed at their cellar door. You will be able to enjoy their award-winning wines while looking out amongst the vineyards and heritage apple orchard.
The craft beer scene around Orange has established itself as a leader. At the award-winning Badlands Brewery, beers are free of preservatives or additives and flavoured with ingredients like hazelnuts, black truffles and figs. Taste them at their cellar door at The Agrestic Grocer. Sample locally-made Pioneer Brewing Co’s brews at Ferment.
Small Acres Cyder sits at the foothills of Mount Canobolas and makes a range of cider from fresh pressed apples and pears grown in Orange. The tasting room is open on weekends. Parrot Distilling Co makes seasonal gin with local and foraged botanicals. They frequently host tastings at local bottle shops or you can buy online.
You’ll find many good bars tucked into the historic buildings of Orange. The Arthouse Bar is housed within a heritage bank building, and the Parkview Hotel is an atmospheric bar dating back to 1865. Browse the craft beer and cocktail list at eclectic Birdie Noshery and Drinking Establishment, or drop in for a whiskey at speakeasy-styled Washington & Co.
