Today, this town is a great place to hire a houseboat, venture into the exceptional Mungo National Park or start the famous Darling River Run road trip.

Paddle-steamers & pioneers

At the turn of the 20th century, Wentworth wharf was bustling with paddle-steamers working the rivers. Climb the viewing tower to see the river junction from above. Follow the Wentworth Trail to uncover the town’s top attractions and historic buildings, including the heritage-listed Old Wentworth Gaol and Ferguson Tractor Monument. At the Wentworth Pioneer Museum, see fossilised remains of Australia’s extinct megafauna and more than 3,000 artefacts from the area.

Natural wonders

At Junction Island Nature Reserve, you can walk to the point where the two rivers meet. Another wonderful way to experience the area’s beautiful rivers, tranquil billabongs and riverside red gums is on a guided kayak tour with Moontongue Eco Adventures. Lock 10 and weir is a great picnic spot.

Visit the culturally significant Perry Sandhills, spectacular drifts of ancient sand dune that have yielded the skeletons of megafauna and contain significant indigenous sites. Wentworth is also the gateway to Mungo National Park. You can join a Mungo guided tour of this starkly beautiful terrain, home to Mungo Man and the Walls of China.

Food & wine

Take a short drive out of town and enjoy teeing off at Coomealla Golf Club, wine tasting at Trentham Estate Winery. Enjoy delicious local flavours and crisp beer at the Crown Hotel, where you can relax in the Fergie Bar beer garden. The whole family will love a tractor train tour of Orange World, an orchard with more than 10,000 trees.

Getting there & where to stay

Wentworth is 12 hours’ drive from Sydney and six hours from Melbourne, making it ideal for a multi-day road trip. It’s also the start or finish for the Darling River Run, a four-day road trip through the NSW Outback. You can fly into Mildura Airport and rent a car for the 30min drive northeast.

You’ll find plenty of accommodation options to suit all budgets around Wentworth, from caravan parks and riverside campsites to holiday houses, motels and resorts. You can also stay in nearby Mungo National Park.

Mildura Airport is less than 10km from Mildura. Use the taxi services at the airport to make the short trip northeast to Mildura’s town centre. Alternatively, rent a car from the hire services available at the airport and explore the region at your own pace.
