Taree
An historic town on the banks of the beautiful Manning River, Taree is the vibrant centre of the Manning Valley and a great base for exploring the national parks and beautiful beaches of the Barrington Coast. With a population of over 26,000 people, Taree is the veritable Big Smoke, served with a solid dose of culture. Tour the Manning Regional Art Gallery, a cultural gem that hosts touring exhibitions and local artwork as well as hosting workshops, drawing classes and even yoga sessions.
Meanwhile, the Manning Entertainment Centre has first-class facilities for performing arts, with a 505-seat theatre that attracts leading Australian talent. For a spot of exercise or relaxation, take a plunge in the modern Manning Aquatic Centre with indoor and outdoor swimming, or play some golf at one of five excellent golf courses.

For a great overview of Taree, the river and the Manning Valley, head to Apex Lookout in Taree West; while for a bird’s-eye view of the valley, from the hinterland to the coast, Manning River Aero Club offers scenic flights.
Explore by road & water
From Taree, enjoy some of the best scenic drives in NSW, visiting beaches, national parks, wineries and farmers markets. Take a boat ride to Coocumbac Island in the middle of the Manning River and explore its remnant of subtropical rainforest. Another tranquil park is Brimbin Nature Reserve 9km north of Taree where you can kayak amongst mangrove-lined waterways and follow riverside trails to picnic areas. An hour’s drive north of Taree is the spectacular Ellenborough Falls, the tallest single drop waterfall in NSW.
Local produce
Founded on agriculture, the Manning Valley is renowned for its fresh produce, showcased in many of Taree’s restaurants, cafes and bars. Popular favourites include Cafe Giardino with its Italian menu, the Corner Pantry, Café Thyme and the fine dining of Sass at Bowers. Food lovers also make a beeline to the Secret Farmers Market held on Thursdays, featuring locally grown and created products.
Getting there & where to stay
A 3hr 45min drive north of Sydney, Taree is at the heart of the beautiful Barrington Coast on the North Coast of NSW. Coach services run from Sydney and Newcastle, as well as trains from Sydney via Newcastle. Fly Pelican currently operates direct flights between Sydney and Taree twice a week.
Accommodation options in the region range from seaside resorts and rural retreats to waterside holiday parks and camping in national parks. Near Taree the Coopernook State Forest has a peaceful camping and picnic area surrounded by tall gums.
Fly into Taree Airport
Taree Airport is 7km from Taree’s town centre. Use the taxi services to make the short trip northeast. Alternatively, rent a car from the hire services available at the airport and explore the regions of Manning Valley and the Great Lakes at your own pace.
