Like many of the New South Wales ski resorts, Perisher was a work camp for the Snowy Mountains Scheme from the 1950s and has grown to become the country's premier winter playground. In 1995 Perisher Blue Ski Resort formed after a merger of Perisher-Smiggins Ski Resort and Blue Cow-Guthega Ski Resort making it the biggest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere. The 1,250 hectares cover seven mountain peaks across the four resorts that are interlinked by an amazing network of lifts. The resort has a large ski and snowboard school, a variety of accommodation, restaurants, bars and nightlife. Ski-tube, which starts at Bullocks Flat on the Alpine Way, travels to Perisher and also links Perisher and Blue Cow.
