If you love spending time in the great outdoors then the Tamworth region is tailor-made for you. The pristine national parks are ideal for bushwalking and canoeing adventures, while fishers make a beeline for the rivers where the catch runs deep. Those who prefer to be airborne can go paragliding or embark on joy flights in a sailplane.
Natural beauty
Warrabah National Park is one of the few inland river parks in NSW. Over 14km of the Namoi River winds through the park, creating dramatic gorges, calm pools and thrilling rapids so there is something for everyone. The park is also fantastic for bushwalking, hiking, camping and generally just getting away from it all.
Explore the natural beauty of northern NSW on horseback, with trail rides and treks. Tamworth & Kootingal Horse Riding Adventures has six different trails on its 1,400 acre property. Harlow Park offers multi-day horseriding treks in the New England High Country around Uralla. Both companies cater to riders of all levels.
Outdoor activities
The region has plenty of outdoor activities suitable for young families. Take the kids fossicking at Wooldridge near Uralla and on the edges of the Peel River in Nundle, a lovely village on the Fossickers Way touring route, which is known as gemstone country. Nearby is Chaffey Dam, a haven for water sports.
Spot rare birds in Barraba. This enchanting town northwest of Tamworth, near the splendid Mount Kaputar National Park and Split Rock Dam, is a great waterway for fishing and boating. The mighty Horton Falls are nearby, you can either do the two hour trek to the base of the gorge or the easier walk to the top of the falls.
Adventure
For a bird’s-eye view of the countryside, you can't go past an aerial adventure. Glide in a tandem sailplane with Lake Keepit Soaring Club, near Gunnedah or chase an even bigger adrenaline rush with the tandem paragliding flight on offer with Fly Manilla Paragliding at Mount Borah, northwest of Tamworth.
