Wine capital of the acclaimed Canberra District, Murrumbateman is a great base to explore the region that extends to Gundaroo and Yass. Murrumbateman’s events calendar is fittingly delicious. Taste superb aged Cabernet from the Helm Wines’ Museum Collection at their annual Rare Cabernet weekend in May, while the Murrumbateman Moving Feast in October is a roving degustation of fine local wines matched with gourmet tasting plates.
Discover fascinating history and heritage at a number of museums and historic sites around Murrumbateman. Visit Cooma Cottage, the home of great Australian explorer Hamilton Hume in the 1800s. At the heritage-listed Allwood Cottage, you’ll find preserved artefacts and 19th-century ambience.
Experience the thrill of mustering sheep and cattle with Burnelee Excursions on Horseback. Murrumbateman is a 3 hour 30-min drive from Sydney and only half an hour from Canberra. You can take a scenic train trip from Sydney to Yass Junction, which takes around 3 hours and 40 mins, and rent a car for the 25 min drive. There are many places to stay, from guesthouses and farm stays to hotels and B&Bs.
Slow life down with a weekend away exploring the pastoral corners of the Canberra Wine District in Murrumbateman and Queanbeyan. Saddle up for a horse ride along pretty bushland trails, sip shiraz straight from the barrel and learn about truffle hunting before tasting these subterranean treasures.
