For a tantalising taste of outback NSW, load up the van or 4WD and revel in the wide open spaces along Jump-Up Loop Road drive, in Sturt National Park. Starting at Tibooburra, it’s a 110km self-guided round trip to Olive Downs and back, via Silver City Highway.
It’s an exhilarating drive that takes in a variety of distinct landscapes typical of Wangkumara country – from the distinctive granite tors near Tibooburra, to the rolling downs and gibber plains, before reaching the iconic Jump-Ups to the north.
There’s plenty to experience along the way, including spectacular birdwatching from the bird hides at Mount King Tank and South Myers Tank. Stretch your legs along Jump-Up walking track and soak in the vast desert views, or check out the historic remains of Mount King Station. If you’re tempted to experience an outback sunset, pitch your tent or park the van at Olive Downs campground.
Pure joy as you wake to the sunrise. Awe as you make it to the snowy peak. A sense of adventure as you motor across red plains. The relief of rejuvenation as you wade into an alpine stream. Connection as you taste native, fragrant leaves. A sense of belonging as you return to your favourite holiday house. Freedom as you dash into the waves. Discover the endless feelings a visit to NSW can inspire.
