Australia’s oldest wine region, the Hunter Valley has forged an international reputation for acclaimed wines, from distinguished Hunter Valley semillon and classic Hunter Valley shiraz to emerging varieties. Vitality thrives in this region, with innovative young winemakers continuing the tradition of excellence.

Since grapes were planted in the early 1820s, wine pioneers such as Tyrrell’s, Dalwood, Lindeman, Drayton and McGuigan have flourished. McGuigan Wines has won International Winemaker of the year four times and Tyrrell’s is famous for iconic Vat 1 Hunter Semillon, first made in 1963.

When young, the Hunter Valley semillon is deliciously crisp with abundant citrus aromas. With age it develops depth and richness with vanilla and honey flavours. For the Hunter Valley shiraz, it is soft and earthy when young and develops complexity over time, with a long and generous finish.

Over the years the pioneers’ success inspired a youthful breed of vignerons to the valley. Fiano, barbera, tempranillo and touriga nacional are just four of the emerging varieties. In addition to the world-famous wineries, you can explore a fine range of boutique, organic and biodynamic vineyards and wineries.

Visit the Wine House in Pokolbin, which offers tastings of fine local boutique produce. Their Tasting Bar showcases some of the best boutique wineries of the region, while their kitchen provides a tantalising menu with delicious dishes that vary with the seasons.

Many wineries operate an open cellar door policy, which allows visitors the freedom to simply turn up and taste wine. There are also thriving restaurants with incredible views of the vineyards and diverse tours, from individual to group bookings, horseback to classic cars and luxury buses.

Perfect for a romantic weekend escape, you’ll find more cellar doors to choose from than anywhere else in Australia. Getting there is easy. Only two hours’ drive north of Sydney and 50 minutes west of Newcastle Airport, trains also depart from Sydney for Maitland and Singleton, via Newcastle.
