Beautifully preserved, a visit to this 19th-century riverside village in the Yass Valley feels like stepping back in time. Classified by the National Trust and Heritage-listed, the historic town is also home to delicious food and wine experiences and surrounded by premium cool climate vineyards.
The Gundaroo Heritage Walk is a great way to explore the history of the town. This self-guided tour walks you through the compelling local history of 25 heritage buildings, from the 1872 Colonial Inn to Clemenger’s Cottage built for the postmaster in 1880 and the Old Boree Station Homestead.
Admire 19th-century slab huts, and wattle and daub buildings, as well as stone and locally-fired brick heritage buildings as you walk along Cork Street. Stop by the Cork Street Cafe and enjoy gourmet pizza in the old Police Stables or in the outdoor courtyard.
Inside the elegantly restored Royal Hotel built in 1865, multi-award-winning restaurant Grazing serves innovative dishes featuring the region’s best seasonal produce, including fruit and veg grown in the chef’s garden. Enjoy a selection of Canberra District wines and handcrafted beers at a fireside table.
Taste superb local wines over a slow grazing style lunch at family-owned Tallagandra Hill Winery on weekends. Joshua’s Fault Wines welcomes visitors to its winery by appointment or stop by the Gundog Estate Cork Street Cellar in the historic stables next door to Grazing for a wine tasting with seasonal dishes.
Gundaroo is just over a three-hour drive from Sydney and approximately half an hour from Canberra. You can take a scenic train trip from Sydney to Yass Junction, which takes around three hours and 40 minutes, and rent a car for the 45-minute drive. Accommodation in the area includes hotels, guesthouses and cottages.
