The Blue Mountains has its fair share of spectacular lookouts. One of the most dramatic vistas can be enjoyed from Govetts Leap in Blackheath. From here, you have an unbroken panorama over the Grose Wilderness, a spectacular union of sandstone escarpments, sheer cliffs, deep canyons and tall waterfalls. It’s a mecca for all manner of wildlife, including yellow-tailed black cockatoos and king parrots – be sure to bring your binoculars if you fancy yourself as a twitcher.
This is the gateway to the challenging Govetts Leap descent trail, 1.8km straight down then straight back up. But you don’t have to work up a sweat to appreciate this dramatic cleave in the Earth.
Linger at the lookout to appreciate the details, like the threatened Blue Mountains cliff mallee-ash tree, only found in this part of the world; the rare giant dragonfly (which can have a wingspan of 11cm and up); and Australia’s largest native land slug.
