Darlington Point

Positioned on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, the small town of Darlington Point is a tranquil spot, with plenty of outdoor adventure opportunities. A worthwhile stop on the Kidman Way, you can enjoy fishing, swimming, boating and kayaking in this peaceful Riverina township.

Things to do

Get a glimpse of big cats up close and admire crocodiles and alligators on a zoo-fari at Altina Wildlife Park. Horse drawn and motorised carts will transport you through the 207 hectare park, with guides telling you all about the local residents. There are also behind the scenes experiences.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy the Murrumbidgee River. Relax on one of the 15 sandy riverside beaches and go for a swim.  You can hire kayaks and paddle along the river, or try your hand at fishing, both from the shore and from a boat.

Explore the Goanna Walking Track, a 1.8km scenic walk along the Murrumbidgee River. You’ll start at Fig Tree Park in the centre of the Darlington Point CBD and head west along the riverbank. Bring a picnic to enjoy at one of the resting places and make sure you check out the signage which gives information on the local flora, fauna and history.

Adjacent to the walking track is Willbriggie Regional Park, part of the wider Murrumbidgee Valley Regional Park.  You can camp for free at Bunyip Hole and Whittackers Bend - part of the longest continuous tract of river red gum forest in the world - and fall asleep to the sounds of the Murrumbidgee River.

Darlington Point was first established as a river crossing town and developed into a farming town, producing fruit, vegetable, grain and rice. To learn more about the town’s history, head to the Darlington Point Museum where you will find antiquated domestic and farm equipment.

Sample delicious olives, olive oil and wines at Yarrow Park. Located on the sand hills of Coleambally, the Cellar Door has an enviable position between the vineyard and olive groves, overlooking bushland. Open each weekend and by appointment on weekdays.

Getting there and where to stay

There are plenty of places to stay in Darlington Point, from country cottages to caravan parks and motels. It’s six hours’ drive from Sydney and five hours from Melbourne. You can also fly to nearby Griffith Airport, which is 30 minutes drive away.

Griffith Airport is 5km from Griffith’s town centre. Use the taxi services available at the terminal to make the short trip south. Alternatively, rent a car at the airport and explore the region at your own pace.

Regional Express operates daily direct flights between Sydney and Griffith, and flights between Broken Hill and Griffith on weekdays.
