Culcairn

Known as the oasis of the Riverina, Culcairn is a beautiful town in The Murray, adorned with tree-lined streets, pretty parks and heritage-listed buildings. Head along to a traditional rural show, discover colonial heritage and bushranger tales, and enjoy cycling, nature and golf.

Heritage & culture

Once a major rail junction during the era of steam trains, the heritage-listed Station House Museum houses intriguing railway history and memorabilia. Wander the streets of Culcairn and you’ll find more history, including the Culcairn Court House and Culcairn Hotel, once the largest hotel on the Melbourne-Sydney railway.

Notorious bushranger Mad Dan Morgan roamed the area during the 1860s. In June 1864, Morgan's stand-off at Round Hill Station in Culcairn resulted in the death of station overseer John McLean. You can visit the hiding spot Morgan used to evade police capture, Morgan’s Lookout, and the John McLean Memorial.
