Perched on a peninsula and surrounded by a river, lake, ocean and national park, Culburra Beach offers a multitude of outdoor activities. Found in the beautiful Shoalhaven region on the NSW South Coast, spend your time in this relaxed coastal town exploring the sparkling blue waterways by paddle board, boat or kayak.
Stretching for 3.7km, Culburra Surf Beach and Warrain Beach are popular surfing spots. Surfing lessons and board hire are available from Culburra Beach Surf School. Go fishing or swimming at the northern end, near Penguin Head, where the beach is patrolled during peak times, or just relax on the fine white sand.
Hire a boat or kayak from South Coast Retreat at Greenwell Point to explore the region’s scenic waters. To the south of Culburra is Currarong, Jervis Bay and Lake Wollumboola, a popular waterway for sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing, and a haven for thousands of migratory and local birds.
North of Culburra is the Crookhaven Heads Lighthouse, as well as the Crookhaven and Shoalhaven rivers, which are part of Australia’s Oyster Coast. You can taste succulent local oysters from Jim Wild’s Oyster Service at Greenwell Point, a charming village on the Crookhaven estuary and a short drive from Culburra.
Visit The Point Gallery and Craft to see local artists’ works and browse for locally produced arts, crafts, jams and relishes. Just west of Greenwell Point is picturesque Pyree, where you’ll find the monthly Pyree Village Art and Handmade Market. While in Pyree, explore the gift shops at the historic Jindyandy Mill.
Part of the Shoalhaven region on the NSW South Coast, Culburra is a 2.5-hour drive from Sydney and just over 2.5 hours' drive from Canberra. From Nowra, the Shoalhaven region’s main town, the drive is just 20 minutes.
