Canberra is home to some of Australia’s most iconic cultural attractions and galleries. Explore Australia’s largest collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the National Gallery of Australia.  

Australia’s Parliament House on Capital Hill is also open to tours. You can watch Question Time or see bills get debated while viewing some historical treasures and contemporary art on display in the building.

The Australian War Memorial is an incredible trove of artefacts and exhibitions honouring those who have fought in war. You’ll find immersive and moving exhibits that chronicle dramatic Australian stories during periods of conflict dating back to the 1800s.

Located near the iconic Lake Burley Griffin, the incredible science centre Questacon is the perfect place for kids to explore and discover a world of science and wonder. You can also explore a wealth of cultural stories at the National Library of Australia.

Natural wonders

The National Museum of Australia is home to extensive exhibits of national significance, from extraordinary Indigenous art to colonial artefacts. Marvel at dinosaur skeletons and fossils at the National Dinosaur Museum, and see native and exotic animals at the National Zoo and Aquarium.

Canberra is surrounded by beautiful outdoor attractions. You’ll find mountain bike trails and walking paths throughout the rich agricultural wine country. There are also many rivers offering great fishing opportunities.

Food & festivals

From prized truffles to craft beers and smoked meats, the capital’s food and wine scene is superb. Sample delicious and award-winning wines from the bountiful Canberra Wine District at the Capital Food and Wine Festival. Check out the Truffle Festival as well as the Capital Region Farmers Market.

Getting there

Canberra is an easy three-hour drive from Sydney. There are also daily train and coach services, and the journey takes 3.5 to 4 hours. You can fly into Canberra Airport and hire a car to explore the region. There’s a huge range of accommodation in the capital from luxury hotels and serviced apartments to budget-friendly motels, caravan parks and B&Bs.
