Lismore Arts Trail

Art lovers are in for a treat in Lismore and the Richmond Valley region of the NSW far North Coast. In amongst natural wonders like UNESCO-listed rainforest, empty beaches and winding rivers, you’ll discover one of the State’s most artistic communities that’s home to galleries, art trails, street art and festivals.

Art galleries

Find everything, including paintings by highly esteemed Aussie artists Margaret Olley (who was born in Lismore), Lloyd Rees and Albert Namatjira at the Lismore Regional Gallery. The gallery also hosts acclaimed international exhibits, monthly cultural talks and art classes for children.

The not-for-profit Nimbin Artists Gallery displays the work of local artists. Blue Knob Hall Gallery and Cafe is inside a restored 1920s building and shows painting, sculpture, glassware, jewellery and more from local and invited artists.

Art trails and street art

Lismore’s Arts, Vintage and Retro Trail is a great way to visit galleries such as the public gallery, the Serpentine Gallery and the Alan Ussher Glassblowing Studio. Follow the riverbank on the Wilsons River Experience Walk and find sculptures, art installations and interpretative panels of local Aboriginal and colonial history.

Wander down the town’s laneways and discover the vivid street murals and graffiti art of the Back Alley Gallery – more than 25 artists are featured. Nimbin is famous for its street art and murals, too. The tradition dates back to the first Aquarius Festival in 1973 and today you’ll find many buildings on the main street acting as a 3D canvas.

Festivals and markets

Check out the busy events calendar for exhibitions, performances and markets. The Lismore Lantern Parade Festival celebrates art and community, with illuminated puppets and fire art. The Channon Craft Market is one of Australia’s oldest arts and crafts markets. Nimbin Markets are the place to pick up local crafts and hear live music.
