Aboriginal Culture in the Hunter Valley

Explore the national parks in and around the Hunter Valley and you’ll find ancient Aboriginal rock art and engravings. Take a tour with an indigenous guide to find out more about the region’s history and discover Aboriginal artworks at galleries and cultural centres.

National parks

Take the Finchley Cultural Walk in the World Heritage listed Yengo National Park to see the Finchley Aboriginal engravings. Signs along the walk give insight into the Aboriginal culture of the area. Take a four-hour guided walk of the park with Girri Girra Aboriginal Experiences.

Join Wollombi Aboriginal Cultural Experiences for a three day immersion camp. Dhurag guide Leanne King will lead you on an exploration of cultural sites, as well as hosting activities at the camp including traditional dance workshops, Aboriginal astronomy and traditional fibre craft.

Aboriginal art

Each year between November and May is the Wupa Aboriginal Art Trail. A free Aboriginal art trail that takes you through the Hunter Valley vineyards, exhibiting traditional and contemporary works of local Wanaruah artists.

Visit the Hunter Valley Visitor Information Centre to see and purchase authentic Aboriginal cultural items and artworks. The centre also sells local produce such as lavender and honey, and handmade artisan goods.
